Just curious: To what extent do you care if the people who are on board with the mission? Or are you fully prepared to hire skilled professionals who are neutral about whether they work for MIRI or another organization?
Joshua, that seems inefficient: presumably they can get more bang for the buck by hiring someone who’s on board with the mission and therefore would be wiling to donate to it via working for less than they’re worth
Our qualifications section lists “A passion for MIRI’s core mission” as the first desired attribute. But if someone is highly skilled and cause neutral due to just being unfamiliar with our work, I would still strongly consider them. It’s pretty common for people to develop more appreciation for where they work over time and I would be fine letting someone come on board without already being fanatically in love with our mission from the outset.
Misha Gurevich “presumably they can get more bang for the buck by hiring someone”. Yes, I agree. Sometimes, though, super-talented professionals are hard to find, yet these top people can produce results many times better than others who are a few levels of ability below them.
