Impressive new stats from Watson (3yr / 24x / 90%):
3 years after its triumph on the television quiz show Jeopardy!, IBM has advanced Watson from a game playing innovation into a commercial technology.
Now delivered from the cloud and able to power new consumer and enterprise apps, Watson is 24 times smarter and 90 percent smaller – IBM has shrunk Watson from the size of a master bedroom to three stacked pizza boxes.

This is why dismissals regarding scalability are bogus; what primarily needs to be scaled is access.
Before the end of this decade, such access will allow nearly anyone with an internet connection to utilize what will essentially be the first generation of “Oracle AI.” More than a mere smart search interface (like Siri), Watson-like AIs will be used to help diagnose disease and prescribe treatments, to improve the assessment of genetic risk factors; they have the potential to comb through the vast body of published research, prune likely fraudulent findings or identify novel results worth replicating, and applications in engineering…well, this list could go on forever.
I think that the hype is underselling the transformative potential of this technology.
To say that Watson-like AI could dramatically upend conventional assumptions about the rate of technological progress is an understatement, but you know that.
When something like an Oracle AI is connected to everyone’s smart phone, people will increasingly take seriously the prospect of intelligence explosion and its consequences.
