Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen founds new Artificial Intelligence Institute

The billionaire will be supporting the new effort both intellectually and financially. Exact dollar amounts for the new center — to be called the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence or AI2 for short — have not yet been laid out.

Etzioni said the institute is very much being modeled on another of Allen’s non-profits, the Allen Institute for Brain Science. The Seattle non-profit started with a $100 million investment from Allen 10 years ago, receiving another $300 million last year. It now employs about 200 people, including several world-renowned scientists in brain research.

Seattle now appears to be getting the equivalent in artificial intelligence.

Unconstrained AI development getting more $$$ poured on it.
