Companies like Apple and HTC have determined that making phones even 0.2mm slimmer is what consumers want, even if it comes at the expense of swappable batteries.
The main problem with this is that iPhones and other devices with built-in batteries always seem to die at the worst possible times: Like when you’re far away from home and headed towards important meetings. But that’s exactly time when you most need maps and the ability to call people.
Since you can’t carry a replacement battery, the best way I know of to make your life more foolproof is to always carry a portable battery charger.
CES was filled with backup battery platforms this year, but I still like the Anker 15000mAh. You can carry it for weeks without it losing its charge. And it has enough extra capacity for more devices than just your cell phone.
If I were more budget minded (or I carried a purse instead of a backpack), I would get Anker’s smaller model that only costs $19. Seems like a small price to pay to avoid the stress of having your cell phone die every so often, right when you need it most.

Keith YoungI just purchased an EasyAcc iChoc 5000mah portable battery charger, it has enough juice to charge my Moto X and my wifes HTC OneS if we are away from mains charging for a period of time. I think I got it on Amazon, landed in Ireland for €25

Paul CrowleyI have the same Anker. It has been a lifesaver many times during this Bay Area, and a great reassurance the rest of the time!

AjzenI got a RAVPower 14000mAh, it’s juicy enough to charge my iPhone 5 up to 8 times and over a charge to my iPad Air. It’s really a monster. I remember I got it for $35 through a promotion at Amazon.
